Changes in the NEC & New Appointments

SNU President David Bruton OSNU, 13th October 2011.

I am pleased to announce the formation of a new Standing Committee to be known as the Collegiate Committee, which will have responsibility for both the Arthur Findlay College and the Arthur Findlay Centre; given the importance of both centres, it is the view of the NEC that overall strategic direction needs to be managed by a Standing Committee rather than a sub-committee. Mr Andrew Hadley CSNU has been appointed to chair this new Committee and the Officers of the Union will also sit on the new Committee. Both Centres will continue to maintain management committees to deal with day-to-day operations.

Minister Steven Upton has stepped down from his position of Chairman of the Communications Standing Committee and has been replaced by Chris James CSNU. Steven will assume the role of Ordinary Member 2, with responsibility for Special Projects and the Pioneer Centres, and he will remain the Public Relations Officer.

I would also like to welcome to the NEC Minister Tony Penketh, who has taken the role of Ordinary Member 3. Tony has taken on the role of Chairman of the General Purposes Committee and remains an integral part of the Philosophy & Ethics Committee. Tony will also head up the task of dealing with the Safeguarding policy within the Union, which is seen as a key area for future development.

I am very pleased to welcome Tony to the NEC and am confident that the changes above build on the strengths of last year's NEC, creating an effective team to undertake the vast workload and responsibility to develop the Union and face the challenges within the wider movement.

It also gives me great pleasure to welcome Claire Shores to the position of General Manager at Redwoods. Claire will lead the administrative team within the Union and be part of implementing new systems and procedures, which should add significant value to the membership.
